A documented Baluster goblet with rare lipped round funnel bowl over a teared angular knop and basal knop, all on a folded conical foot.
Engraved in diamond point around the rim of the bowl is " Novr Ye 11, 1728 , ffor Master Shaw's Helth in a Bumper " the foot is engraved with the name L Waters,
Joseph Bles was one of the very first serious collectors of 17th and 18th century English glasses and in 1925 published his book "Rare English Glasses of the XV11 and XV111 Centuries", and to use his words the book was not about the " history or technique of glass making in general , but with glasses in particular. It is in fact a Catalogue Raisonne . exhibiting some of the rarest specimens of each kind, many of which have not hitherto been before the public "
A fascinating glimpse at a specific moment in history, who was Master Shaw ? and why the presentation inscription , coming of age maybe ? and who was the engraver and presumably the giver of the gift ?.
A wonderful large goblet in very fine condition with superb provenance.
Height 8 ins 20.3 cm
