Champagne or Sweetmeat Glass
C 1740/50
A lovely champagne or sweetmeat glass ,having a double ogee bowl which is octagonally moulded at the base with ribs extending up the bowl, over a stem with central beaded knop and basal knop, all on a domed foot similarly moulded.
Height 5 7/8th ins 14.9 cm
A superb glass in perfect original condition.
The decision as to whether a glass is for champagne or not has always been a problem, when I asked my friend Ward Lloyd, (author of Investing in Georgian Glass ) the same question many years ago his answer was , " if it is comfortable to drink from then why not ? ", other glasses of similar form may have features that would point more obviously to it being a sweetmeat , a folded bowl rim or a bowl which is widely flared , this example has been "road tested" and I can say that as a drinking glass it passes with flying colours.
