Rare Irish Champagne or Sweetmeat Glass
C 1740/50
A rare and large Irish plain stem Champagne or Sweetmeat glass, having a double ogee bowl with a slightly everted rim over a tapered plains stem with collars at the top and bottom, all on a domed and folded foot ,
Height 6 3/4 ins 17.2 cm
Glasses with this stem form are thought to be Irish in origin see B Haynes Glass Through the Ages , page 246 and plate 78e (not f as it says in the book) , mostly these stems are found on wine glasses with either a bell or conical bowl , the conical bowl example are also found with period Williamite engraving , my photos show a wine with bell bowl for stem comparison , (nfs)
this is the first example of it's type I have seen and I can find no others recorded.
A wonderful rare glass in perfect original condition.
